Potchen-Passariello Award
E. James Potchen, MD, JD
Dr. Potchen received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in 1954, his medical degree from Wayne State University in 1958, his master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973, and his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1984.
He became Professor and Chief of Diagnostic Radiology, at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine, then Professor of Radiology and Dean of Management Resources at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1975 he accepted the position as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Michigan State University.

Prof. Roberto Passariello
Roberto Passariello was a greatly admired radiologist whose tireless dedication to his field is evident from the enormous body of literature he published during his career, the many congresses, seminars and courses he organized, and his work on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals.
As well as serving as president of the ECR (1999) and the EAR (1999-2000), Passariello was president of the Italian Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, the Italian Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology.
He received the ECR Gold Medal in 2003 for his outstanding contribution to and leadership in European radiology.

SMRA Junior Fellowship
Goals of Program
The goals of the junior fellowship program are multifaceted. SMRA seeks to recognize early career scientists who contributed to the mission of SMRA through engagement in MRA research and society activities. This program is designed to provide junior fellows with unique experiences and insights into the working of the society, that might be beneficial for future leadership roles within or outside SMRA. Furthermore, we hope that the fellowship will allow younger scientists to attend the annual meetings and provide additional communication pathways between junior SMRA members and SMRA leadership.
Requirements
Applicants must be 35 years old or younger, hold a postgraduate medical degree, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree. They must be currently enrolled in a residency or clinical fellowship program, working as a postdoctoral researcher, or within 3 years of their first academic appointment at the time of the application. The following application materials are required.
- Applicant CV, containing Education, Publications, Conference Abstracts and Awards sections.
- Applicant statement of intent (2 pages), describing the applicant’s background, research interests, and future goals as well as their involvement and/or interest in SMRA.
- Nomination reference: the application should be accompanied by contact details of one reference letter writer (name, affiliation and e-mail address). The nominated reference letter writer should be willing to provide a letter of nomination that discusses the candidate’s research ability and the candidate’s involvement with SMRA.

Benefits
SMRA Junior Fellows will receive:

Waived annual meeting registration fee and a travel stipend to attend the annual meeting for the year of the award.

Presentation at “Meet the Junior Fellows” session at the annual meeting.

An invitation to join the on-site SMRA advisory board meeting, and trainee board membership for the year following award reception.

A biographical interview that will be shared on the SMRA website/social media.

A designated senior SMRA mentor with expertise in the research area of the junior fellow. Mentors will be available to fellows for consultation regarding scientific research, future career trajectory. Mentors are encouraged to provide virtual lab visits to allow for scientific exchange across sites.

Nomination letters will be due one week after the fellowship application deadline, also to be submitted to awards@society4mra.org.
We encourage anyone that meets the requirements to apply, even if you are unable to attend SMRA 2025 in person. The awards committee will review applications, and results will be disseminated to applicants by the end of May.
